Captain America 1941-2007

In a move that many will find as a total surprise, Marvel comics has killed off everyones favorite super patriot Captain America, created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Captain America issue #25, which hits news stands today, will show Cap getting shot in the shoulder and gut by a sniper as he leaves the courthouse (following the Civil War story arc - a series that was interesting in concept, but lacking in its conception).

Obviously, such an important corner-stone character isn't going to stay dead for long. Like the death of Superman in 1993, there will be abundant speculation, title tie-ins and commemorative issues to spur lagging sells. Dollars to donuts, SHIELD set it up to get Cap off the streets and in hiding for his part in the Civil War saga (or perhaps an important mission he wouldn't have been able to take should he have been tied up in court and/or prison). Yeah, I know its a played out theme, but it fits so nicely! In the meanwhile, as in Superman's death, I expect we'll see many new and old characters attempt to assume the mantle.

My personal prediction is that the resurrected Bucky (Winter Soldier) will take up the shield and costume, but haunted by his personal demons, will not set the shining example that is the hallmark of Captain America. Perhaps he'll even go so far as to kill someone. This will spur Steve Rogers to come out of hiding/retirement to take back his alias - ala Batman/Azrael following Batmans recuperation from having his back broken by Bane. Thus proving its not the mask, but the man behind the mask thats important.
